Fifty consecutive patients, presenting with signs and symptoms referable to the urinary tract, that could have been an inflammatory or neoplastic process were studied to evaluate the reliability of urinary cytology against bladder wash cytology, compared with histopathologic study. It is a prospective study over a period of two years. There were 40 men and 15 women between the ages of 17 to 82 years. The voided urine and bladder wash specimens 50 ml each were fixed in equal volume of 2% formal saline. Smears were prepared from the cell sediment for comparison, biopsy specimens from these patients were subjected to histopathologic study.
Of the 55 cases, inflammatory lesions (60%) out numbered the malignant lesions (25%). The sensitivity of urine cytology was 90% and 79% for non neoplastic and neoplastic conditions respectively. The sensitivity for bladder wash cytology was found to be 93%. Similarly, the specificity was 79% and 90% for non neoplastic and neoplastic lesions respectively by the urine cytology method, whereas the same by bladder wash cytology was found to be 94%.
